Cracking the Code on Sprayskirt Sizes: A Guide for Kayakers

If you've ever stood in front of a wall of sprayskirts wondering what 1.7 means—or if “Large” is your kind of large—you’re not alone. At Comox Valley Kayaks & Canoes, we hear it all the time: “How do I know which sprayskirt will fit my kayak?” It’s a fair question, especially since sizing isn’t standardized across brands. So let’s break it down and take the confusion out of finding the right sprayskirt for your boat.

Why Sprayskirt Sizing Matters

A properly fitted sprayskirt keeps water out of your cockpit and ensures a safe, dry, and enjoyable paddling experience—especially in rough water or while practicing rolls. Too loose, and you’ll take on water. Too tight, and you may struggle to put it on (or worse, take it off in an emergency).

To get the right fit, you need to look at two parts of the sprayskirt:

  1. Deck size – the part that covers the cockpit rim of your kayak.

  2. Tunnel size – the part that goes around your torso.

Understanding Deck Sizing

Seals Sprayskirts: The Number System

Seals uses a numerical system—like 1.4, 1.7, 2.2, etc.—to indicate the deck size. In this system, the higher the number, the larger the cockpit opening it’s designed to fit. Simple enough, right?

But here's the catch: they're not units of measurement, and to make things even more confusing, these numbers are not standardized across the industry. A Seals 1.7 might not match a "Medium" in another brand, which is why it’s important to refer to brand-specific sizing charts or tools.

Level Six: Letter Sizes

Level Six takes a more familiar route, using S, M, L, XL, etc. for their deck sizing. That said, you may still be wondering how to find the equivalent between the two brands. Well, luckily, Level Six has made life easier by creating a compatibility chart that aligns with Seals sizing (at least for their Nylon skirts). So if you know your Seals size, you can easily find the equivalent in Level Six.

If you're looking for the equivalent in a full neoprene skirt, you'll have to do a little more work. Bust out the measuring tape, note the dimensions for the length and width of your cockpit, then compare the numbers against the sizing chart for whichever skirt you're looking at (Ace & King Sizing chart provided below for reference).

What About the Tunnel?

If you're buying a full neoprene sprayskirt, the tunnel is not adjustable—so getting the right size is crucial. Tunnels typically come in XS-XXL, and you’ll want to consider:

  • Your body size and shape

  • What layers you’ll be wearing underneath (drysuit, base layers, etc.)

  • How snug you like the fit

Check each brand's size guide—they vary slightly, and the right tunnel size can make all the difference in comfort and performance.

Nylon & Neo-Nylon Skirts: One Size Fits All (Almost)

With nylon or neo-nylon hybrid skirts, you're in luck. These often come with adjustable Velcro tunnels, making sizing much more forgiving. If you’re new to paddling or want something versatile that can be used for multiple paddlers, these can be a great option.

Use the Tools!

Both Seals and Level Six offer online sizing tools where you can input the make and model of your kayak, and they’ll tell you exactly what size deck you need. We highly recommend using these tools to simplify your selection—especially if you’re shopping online or can’t bring your boat in.
