Paddling to the Ghost Ships of Royston gives you a unique perspective of these massive hulks resting on the ocean floor, mere ghosts of their former glory. 

A guided sea kayaking adventure from the Courtenay River to the hauntingly beautiful Royston Shipwrecks. Along the way, you'll explore the history and marine life of the Comox Valley while enjoying stunning coastal views. Perfect for all skill levels, this tour offers a unique glimpse into BC’s maritime past. All gear and instruction are provided—just bring your sense of adventure!

The Royston Wrecks, located near Courtenay, BC, are a collection of 14-15 historic ships scuttled between 1936 and the early 1960s to create a breakwater for log booming grounds. Ranging from lumber carriers to WWI-era warships, these vessels protected timber operations from harsh ocean swells, creating one of Canada's most accessible "ghost fleets". 

  • Origin: The Comox Logging and Railway Company began sinking vessels in the 1930s when log handling in Comox Harbour became too dangerous due to rough winter winds and storms.

  • The Fleet: The graveyard includes diverse vessels, including the 1876-built Melanope (a notable windjammer), the 1917 Laurel Whalen (the first to be sunk), and former Royal Canadian Navy frigates.
