How To Wash A Sea Kayak

Maintaining your kayak is essential for preserving its performance and longevity. Regular cleaning not only keeps your boat looking pristine but also ensures that it functions smoothly on the water. Here’s a detailed guide on how to properly wash your kayak:

1. Start with the Bottom of the Hull:

● Begin by spraying the bottom of the hull with water to remove any loose debris, mud, or sand that may have accumulated.

2. Use Soapy Water and a Magic Eraser:

● Mix water with soap in a bucket and use a magic eraser or a soft sponge to clean stubborn grime, blemishes, and seaweed residue from the hull. Continuously assess the surface for any signs of damage or wear.

3. Rinse Thoroughly:

● Rinse off the soapy water from the hull, ensuring you get the chines (the edges of the hull). Flip the boat over so it's upright.

4. Check and Clean the Hatches:

● Inspect the hatches. If they are wet or dirty inside, leave the covers off to air dry. If dry, cover them back up to prevent water ingress during storage.

5. Clean the Top and Inside:

● Spray and clean the top deck of the boat, including crevices, inside the cockpit, seat, and rudder with water to remove sand and gravel. Adjust the seat if possible to access hard-to-reach areas.

6. Use Soapy Water Again:

● Apply soapy water and use a magic eraser again to thoroughly wash the top deck, paying attention to under the decklines, hatch covers, and other hard-to-reach areas. Follow up with a good rinse to remove all soap residue.

7. Use a Wet/Dry Shop Vac:

● For thorough drying, use a wet/dry shop vac to suction out water from the hatches and cockpit. Elevating one end of the kayak on a cradle helps collect water at one end for easier removal.

8. Dry the Hatches:

● Use a towel or rag to dry out the hatches completely. This will prevent mildew and mold from building up inside. Dry hatches ensure your gear stays clean and dry during storage and future trips.

9. Neoprene Hatch Covers (If Applicable):

● If your kayak has neoprene hatch covers, remove them and let them dry in the sun for a few minutes to maintain their elasticity and prevent moisture buildup.

10. Final Touches:

● Ensure hatch covers close easily. Apply Armour All or a suitable protectant (like 303 for non-Delta boats) to lubricate the seals if needed, ensuring a tight, waterproof fit.

11. Voila, Your Kayak Is Ready!

● With these steps completed, your kayak will be clean, dry, and ready for your next adventure on the water. Regular maintenance like this ensures your kayak remains in optimal condition for years to come.

Keeping your kayak clean not only enhances its appearance but also prolongs its lifespan and ensures a safe and enjoyable paddling experience. Follow these steps regularly to maintain your kayak’s performance and keep it looking as good as new!
